I regularly help out at an institution (Harteheem in Heemskerk) for mentally handicapped people, hereafter referred to as 'clients'. The coordinator of activities organized a great event from last Sunday to Tuesday: a great air castle on a nearby football terrain. Creator of the air castle is the firm Architects of Air, UK. They have several kinds of air castles traveling all over the world. They are hired for various reasons, for a cultural festival, or as in this case, as a sort of snooze environment for mentally handicapped people. It was a magical experience, the atmosphere inside the air castle is extraordinary, fairy tale like. You have to imagine ambient like softly played music with it. Certainly when the sun was shining, it was warm & cozy inside, so you could cuddle up in one of the 'holes'. Mind you, this was not a ‘jumping air castle’; the floor was solid (though later on it became a bit soggy due to the rain).
Next you'll find lots of photos Sander and I made in and outside of the castle. Obviously you will not see any pix figuring clients of Harteheem (privacy). The photos underneath dated August 27 and 28 are mine, taken by hand, without flash. The photos dated August 26 and 29 are Sander’s, taken with a tripod, without flash.
The designer Alan Parkinson calls his creations Luminariums by the way. 'Our' castle is called Amozozo, its Mosque-like domes are beautiful from the in and the outside. There is no artificial lighting inside; the colored light is daylight coming through the colored pieces of PVC.
