May 20, 2006 The afternoon was devoted to the catacombs of Paris. Originally, these were stone quarries (steengroeven) used by the Romans. In 1786, Paris started to use them as a hygienic alternative for the Parisian cemetaries. Millions of skulls and bones were transferred from the very unhygienic cemetary in Les Halles into the old quarries. It took 15 months to complete the job.
Before you enter the area, you have to pass this door: 'Arręte! C'est ici l'empire de la mort'. In English: Stop! Here is the empire of death.
